The Issue

Growing up, I had plenty of opportunity to grow up and play outside, with Ellis park just down the road from my house. It created in me a deep love for the outdoors and God’s creation. In our age of social media, video games, and AI, kids are lacking in some of the deepest needs of our humanity. Kids need the opportunity to recover what is real in life. That's why it means so much for me and my wife, especially now that we're expecting our first child, to push for more green spaces in our neighborhood. When we moved to our house, we heard of a beautiful park that once stood where Trail Side Elementary is now, a place where families, children, and community members would gather. Unfortunately, that space was replaced, and our community lost its cherished outdoor retreat.

The lot on the corner of 29th Street and 1st Avenue, which was formerly the Midwest 3PL warehouse, presents a unique opportunity for our community. With the redevelopment plans on the horizon, we have a chance to advocate for a green space that will benefit our children and future generations. The vision for this spot is ultimately about creating a space for children to explore, learn, and grow.

According to the National Recreation and Park Association, public parks improve community well-being, provide organisms for exercise, and improve local air quality. There is a large number of children in our community who would benefit from safe outdoor play opportunities. Furthermore, parks can increase property values, increase curb appeal, and reduce stress levels among residents.

By signing this petition, you are not only advocating for recreational spaces but also for the mental and physical health benefits that come with them. Let’s come together to ensure the lot at 29th St and 1st Ave becomes a beautiful public park, a decision that will benefit the entire community for years to come.

Join us in creating a legacy of a healthier, more connected, and sustainable community. Please sign this petition today and help us make this dream a reality.
