The Issue

On August 8, 2025, our family's world shattered. We lost Rylo, my son's beloved dog, in a tragic hit-and-run accident. It was not just the loss of a pet; it was the loss of my son's best friend, his confidant, his whole world. It happened right in our neighbourhood, on Hwy 218, and the driver didn't even stop to look back. I can't stop replaying the scene in my head—the sound of the impact, the eerie silence after, and the heartbreak on my son's face when he realized Rylo was gone forever. Rylo was more than "just a dog." He was part of our family. He greeted us with unbridled joy, brought comfort and warmth, and made our house truly feel like a home. His loss has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.

This tragedy, though deeply personal, highlights a broader issue affecting the safety of Fairview, NC's residents and their beloved pets. Hwy 218, despite being a residential area, currently allows for a passing zone and does not adequately safeguard the pedestrians and animals that frequent the area. Cars rush through our community, often at speeds that make it impossible to stop safely if something—or someone—unexpectedly appears.

We are calling for urgent changes to Hwy 218: convert the existing passing zone to a non-passing zone, and reduce the speed limit to ensure it aligns with a safer, community-friendly setting. These adjustments will not only make our neighborhoods safer for families, children, and pets but could potentially save lives.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reducing speed limits in residential areas significantly decreases pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the event of accidents. Our request is simple and reasonable, yet it could prevent future heartbreaks like ours and enhance the quality of life for everyone in Fairview.

We need your support to make this change. Stand with us in urging local authorities to prioritize the safety of our community. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer environment where families can thrive without fear of unnecessary tragedy.

Please sign our petition and help us make Hwy 218 a safer place for everyone in Fairview, NC. Because no one should have to endure the pain of losing such an irreplaceable companion due to preventable circumstances.
