Convert Fort Calhoun High School’s grading scale to a 10 point scale

Convert Fort Calhoun High School’s grading scale to a 10 point scale
The Issue
Many students at Fort Calhoun High School, including myself, have experienced the unfair impact of our outdated grading scale. Our current system, which does not align with the more commonly used 10-point scale, has unjustly stripped many of us of our well-deserved 4.0 GPAs. This system has far-reaching consequences, affecting college admissions, scholarship opportunities, and even our self-esteem.
In today's competitive academic environment, a fair and equitable grading system is crucial. The current scale at Fort Calhoun High School demands percentages much higher than those required by most schools nationwide to achieve the same letter grades. For instance, to obtain an A, students must maintain a score significantly above the standard 90% threshold used in most 10-point scale schools. This puts us at a distinct disadvantage compared to our peers in other districts, as our GPAs do not accurately reflect our hard work and academic abilities.
Evidence from reputable educational resources supports the transition to a 10-point grading scale. Numerous studies highlight how schools implementing this change have seen improved student morale, reduced stress levels, and a more accurate representation of student performance. Furthermore, converting to a 10-point scale aligns Fort Calhoun High School with the majority of high schools across the country, creating a level playing field for all students when applying to colleges and universities.
To put this into perspective, students in districts with a 10-point grading scale receive grades that genuinely mirror their efforts and capabilities. These students are often more successful in gaining admissions and scholarships due to the accurate portrayal of their academic records.
By making this transition, we not only ensure fairness and equity for current and future students but also foster an environment where academic success is accurately represented. This change will positively impact students' future prospects, mental health, and overall academic experience.
We are calling on the Fort Calhoun High School administration, the School Board, and all stakeholders involved in our educational system to recognize the importance of converting to a 10-point grading scale. This change will empower students, align our grading system with national standards, and promote a fair academic environment.
