The Issue

Growing up, skateboarding was more than just a sport or recreational activity for me; it transformed my life. It taught me discipline, perseverance, and creativity, keeping me active and connected with a diverse community. Now, I want to extend these benefits to the vibrant community of Lancaster by converting a city-owned vacant property into a DIY skatepark—without spending a single dollar of taxpayer money.

For many young people, skateboarding offers a positive outlet and an inclusive environment to express themselves. However, Lancaster currently lacks a dedicated space for skateboarders to practice and connect. This has often resulted in skaters using unsuitable public spaces, which can lead to potential conflicts with pedestrians and law enforcement. By establishing a legitimate DIY skatepark, we can mitigate these issues and provide a safe, sanctioned area for skating.

Rejuvenating a vacant property into a community-centric skatepark would not only benefit skateboarders but would also serve as a revitalizing force for the surrounding area. Successfully executed, this project can reduce vandalism, increase foot traffic, and boost local businesses by attracting visitors from neighboring areas who wish to skate or watch exhibitions.

The best part? This initiative requires no public funding. We aim to cover the costs through local fundraising and contributions from the skateboarding community passionate about seeing this transformation take place. This grassroots approach ensures the project is by the skaters, for the skaters, fostering ownership and pride in the final result.

I have already attended two meetings with local law enforcement and city officials to discuss this idea. Your support and signature will amplify our voices and show the city of Lancaster that this is a cause worth investing in, socially if not financially.

Sign this petition and help us turn an unused space into a thriving center of skate culture, community, and creativity. Together, we can build a skatepark that reflects the spirit and passion of the Lancaster community.
