"Control Animal Breeding to Relieve Overburdened Shelters and Volunteers"
The Issue
As someone deeply concerned about the welfare of animals and the tireless efforts of shelters, rescuers, and volunteers, I am starting this petition to address a critical issue that is pushing these compassionate individuals beyond their breaking point. The sheer volume of unwanted animals in desperate need of love and care has reached an alarming level, putting immense strain on our already overwhelmed animal welfare system.
This petition is personal to me because I have witnessed firsthand the emotional toll it takes on those who dedicate their lives to saving animals. Countless friends and acquaintances who work tirelessly in shelters or volunteer for rescue organisations are now at capacity, struggling to provide adequate care for the ever-increasing number of abandoned or neglected animals.
It is crucial that we take immediate action by significantly reducing and controlling animal breeding. By doing so, we can alleviate the burden on shelters, rescuers, and volunteers who are currently operating well beyond their limits. Here are some key reasons why this issue demands urgent attention:
1. Overpopulation Crisis:
An estimated 2.7 million animals enter UK animal shelters each year. Of these, 1.2 million are cats, 664,000 are dogs, and 184,000 are other animals (fish, small mammals, etc.).
Over 50% of dogs entering UK animal shelters are not spayed or neutered. As a result, over 2 million puppies are born every year, and 600,000 of them will die before their first birthday.
The number of stray cats and dogs arriving at shelters in the United Kingdom has increased by 6% over the last 10 years.
Most animal shelters do not have the funding available to save all animals that come into their care.
Of all pets that enter UK animal shelters, only 11% are reunited with their owners.
Over 50% of dogs entering UK animal shelters are crossbreeds that don’t find homes as easily as pedigree breeds.
60% of animal lovers would consider rehoming a pet. Only 34% of people would consider euthanasia for their pet rather than rehoming it.
On average, it takes an animal shelter four days to become full.
The most common reasons for animals being abandoned are due to owners moving homes or moving overseas.
Before adoption, animals in a shelter are health-screened.
Animal shelters receive more than 80,000 calls a year from people looking for a pet to adopt.
2. Strained Resources: Shelters struggle with limited space, funding shortages, insufficient staff members/volunteers ratio per animal ratio which compromises proper care standards.
3. Emotional Toll: Witnessing innocent animals suffer due to overbreeding takes an enormous emotional toll on shelter workers/rescuers/volunteers leading them towards burnout or compassion fatigue. Claire Harding, a wheelchair bound animal rescuer from Bedfordshire, has had her mental health absolutely obliterated by the plight of animals and the ignorance and incompetence of the UK population. She has saved the lives of countless animals, accumulating crippling debts in the process, and has reached breaking point. There are other savers of animals' lives out there who will doubtless feel the same. The volume of unwanted animals HAS TO STOP!
4. Financial Burden: The cost associated with caring for large numbers of unwanted animals places an overwhelming financial burden on both public-funded shelters as well as private rescue organisations and individuals.
By signing this petition, we urge lawmakers, animal welfare organisations, and responsible breeders to come together and implement the following measures:
1. Mandatory Spay/Neuter Programs: Enact legislation requiring all pet owners to spay/neuter their animals unless they hold a valid breeding license.
2. Stricter Regulation of Breeders: Implement comprehensive regulations and licensing requirements for breeders to ensure responsible practices that prioritise the well-being of animals over profit.
3. Public Education Campaigns: Launch widespread educational initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of adoption, responsible pet ownership, and the consequences of irresponsible breeding.
4. Support for Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Services: Increase funding for low-cost spay/neuter programs in order to make these services accessible to all pet owners regardless of their financial situation.
Together, we can make a significant difference in curbing animal overpopulation and providing much-needed respite and relief to shelters, rescuers, and volunteers who are tirelessly working towards giving these innocent creatures a chance at a better life.
