Continue the legacy of the UMBC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.

The Issue

Dear UMBC Board of Directors,

The decision was made to not have a sonography program for the 2023-2024 cohort. As I am sure this decision was not made lightly, it has impacted many people and will impact many more people in the years to come.

For instance, many applicants for this upcoming year have been preparing and taking prerequisites to be able to apply just to be told there will not be a program this year. Other individuals, did not get selected for the current cohort and were waiting for this year to hopefully be successful this time.

Past students of this wonderful program in their current job sites look forward to the future students to be able to staff their ultrasound departments with educated, critical thinking staff that come out of this program. In the current ultrasound community most hospitals, outpatient clinics, maternal fetal medicine centers and other offices alike, are already understaffed in a post-covid environment not suited for sustainability. The future UMBC DMSP students offer hope of full departments able to give each patient the quality care they deserve.

The UMBC DMSP has been around for more than 40 years and has been the largest producer of qualified diagnostic medical sonographers in the region. Without the new class, this program will lose its accreditation and not only will the program not have students, the same hospitals, outpatient clinics, surgery centers, and maternal fetal medicine centers will not have enough staff to take care of the patients that need it.

The action of not taking a class this upcoming year is not only devastating for the applicants looking forward to becoming a part of the ultrasound community, but it is as equally if not more devastating for what lies in the future without this program and its outcomes.

It is with our sincere wishes that the board of directors for UMBC reconsiders this decision and its implications. Please do not take away this program, what it stands for, and all the lives saved because of it.

Sincerely,

The past, present, and future students of the UMBC DMSP
