Ban the plastic Flow Hive

Ban the plastic Flow Hive
The issue
Billions of bees are being unnecessarily subjected to our petrochemical waste.
There are over 80000 sets of plastic hives out there now. The environmental friendly pursuit of beekeeping is adding to the already devastating plastic waste issue we have globally.
A honeybee colony is sacred as a whole the wax is the skin and honey is their blood. It is an insect that has been living in harmony with the earth for millions of years.
Bees do not respond well to greed and they are not responding well to the flow hive. There are numerous issues that have arisen. In the cold climate of Victoria, it was a rare occasion to have one work effectively and easily. So many issues including the bees taking a long time to move up to the plastic frames even when the bottom box has no room left and honey harvest taking hours to eventually drip out.
Jelly bush honey is impossible to get out, sometimes they leak, and bees drown, frames warp and break, it’s common for ants to infiltrate areas of the frames and many have trouble finding freezer space to store the bulky frames over winter. One of the main ways bee communicate is through vibrations through the beeswax to one another and I have concerns that the heavy plastic frames may be effecting their language.
When flowhive launched in 2015 I was amazed and fascinated with the invention that captured the imagination of the whole world. I had already read the sharmanic way of the bee by Simon Buxton who suggested
“The privilege of being a beekeeper is not to generate as much honey as possible. We keep bees so that we can contribute to pollination. Actually the future of beekeeping is not in one beekeeper with 60,000 hives, rather it is 60,000 people with one or a few hives. All of them approaching the art and craft of being a keeper of bees as a holistic practice (Simon Buxton ‘The Shamanic Way of the Bee’).
Now in 2021 over 80000 units have been sold to over 80 countries in the world FLOWHIVE seem to have contributed to this vision .
Small scale farming can feed the world and people keeping honeybees is critical to that vision.
Microplastics are the new threat for bees. Bees have evolved to have hairy body. The hairs are electorally charged during flight which is meant to make pollen stick however according to the a recent study about one-sixlh of all particles found on the bees are micro plastics.
There are many alternatives hive designs that promote natural beekeeping methods such as the Warre and Kenyan top bar hive. When bees build natural comb without foundation, the harvesting process is simple and you do not need any special equipment.
If you see an beekeeping influencer only praising the positive and withholding the negative check if they are a paid ambassador. Here is an experienced beekeeper talking us through why is is bad for bees.
Flower hive have never spoken out against bee killing chemicals such as Glyphosate and Neonicotinoids and are enthusiastic to collaborate with the monoculture farming industry.
Flow hive have an unlimited advertising budget. Please help to spread the word and SHARE this petition
