Construct More Grocery Stores with Healthy Food Options in Southeast Raleigh
The Issue
We are students at Enloe High School, and many of our classmates who live near school are situated a mile or more away from the nearest grocery store or affordable healthy food options. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a threat to their health and well-being. This area of our city is what's known as a 'food desert', where access to fresh, nutritious food is severely limited.
According to the USDA, approximately 23.5 million people live in food deserts across the United States (USDA Economic Research Service). In North Carolina alone, over 1.5 million residents are affected by this issue (Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina). The lack of access to healthy foods leads to higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases.
We need more grocery stores that offer healthy food options in southeast Raleigh. Not only would this provide much-needed resources for those living in these underserved areas but it would also promote healthier lifestyles and reduce health disparities among our community members.
It's time for change. It's time for us to ensure everyone has equal access to nutritious foods irrespective of their geographical location within our city boundaries. Sign this petition today so we can bring about positive change for southeast Raleigh residents!
