Construct bike racks at the South Coast Plaza

Construct bike racks at the South Coast Plaza
The Issue
As gas prices go up and there is no driving education in town, many people look into alternate modes of transportation. Bicycles are the most popular of the bunch; even for traversing on Highway 101 because they provide exercise without emissions. The bad news is that they are often stolen once the opportunity is there.
The larger parts of Brookings have bike racks made available for everyone. Fred Meyers, the health clinic, and even the high school as one. South Coast Plaza in the Harbor area does not have one and it's frequently visited. The plaza is home to Rite Aid and their pharmacy, McKay's grocery store, Dollar Tree, a couple of cellphone stores, an employment office, and a couple of small restaurants. If you don't count the bolted metal bench by McKay's, there is no secure way to lock up your bike while you do your business. One of the store owners was worried about their customers having their bikes stolen and allowed bike owners to park in their store. It's a small space that can get into people's way, but it's the only secure place in the plaza.
The best solution to the problem is to have a bike rack installed where there is a solid wall between locations. On top of that, a security camera can be installed to keep an eye on the rack. That way, the shoppers come and go on bikes, scooters, and more without worrying about theft. It may be pricy and loud while the rack is being installed, but it will be worth the temporary hassle.
More and more people are riding bikes and places that attract a lot of customers need a rack for peace of mind. Bikes are a healthier and cleaner alternative to cars after all. If you would like to help make this a possibility for South Coast Plaza goers, please consider signing this petition and sharing it with your friends. Let's make Brookings-Harbor a better place: one bike rack at a time.
