As a dedicated skater with a history spanning almost 20 years, I have experienced firsthand the positive impact that the skateboarding community can have on individuals and society as a whole. Unfortunately, in Elkin, NC, our potential is not being fully realized due to the lack of a dedicated skatepark or DIY area.

The effects of a local skatepark extend beyond just the skating community. Skateparks provide a safe, designated space for skaters to gather and practice their skills, reducing the risk of property damage and conflicts with foot traffic in public areas. Not to mention, these spaces can act as a platform where young people can develop their athleticism, creativity, and bravery.

According to surveys completed by the Tony Hawk Foundation, communities that have established skateparks notice an increase in physical activity among teens and a decrease in youth crime rates. Moreover, skateparks also foster inclusivity and camaraderie, as they are often frequented by a diverse range of individuals from the locality.

This much-needed resource would both foster personal growth in regular users like myself and offer the broader community peace of mind knowing skaters have a safe place to enjoy their sport.
