Sandra Cecelski started this petition to Mayor Elect Lynn Barbee and

There are three “Conservation” zoned area of Carolina Beach, consisting of Freeman Park, Carolina Beach Lake, and a small wooded .47 acre tract located at 601 Augusta Avenue.  The Augusta Avenue tract has been zoned “Conservation” for over 21 years.  Under its current zoning, this lot is unbuildable due to size limitations.  This tract has recently been purchased by a developer who wants to remove the conservation status and change the zoning to R-1.  He intends to maximize his profit by subdividing the conservation land into four lots with a possibility of two duplexes and two houses in place of what are now beautiful woods.   This is an unacceptable expansion of what is allowed on this tract. This forest includes mature long-leaf pine trees, magnolias, yellow jasmine, flowering titi and a host of other beautiful plants.  The destruction of these woods is not good for wildlife or for our community.

The proposed development of the conservation land on 601 Augusta Avenue does not align with the Town of Carolina Beach 2020 long term land use plan.  The plan has specific goals for retaining single family neighborhoods, protecting mature trees, and reducing the effects of storm water and flooding.

Please speak up, sign, and share this petition if you think we should maintain what trees, green space and natural resources we have left in Carolina Beach, especially in a conservation area such as this.  Share your concerns by emailing our elected representatives.  Also, try to attend the next "planning and zoning" meeting to be held on December 9 at 6:30 PM, at the town hall. The final decision will be made at the town council meeting on January 11, 6:30 PM, at the town hall.    Help save what green space we have left for the future of our community!
