Conserve and Protect Fort Halifax Park For Future Generations

Conserve and Protect Fort Halifax Park For Future Generations
The Issue
As residents who value and appreciate the long history and rich heritage of Halifax, Fort Halifax Park plays a vital role in connecting our citizens both with their history as well as the natural beauty of our small but unique little town. The diverse array of events - festivals, fairs, and community gatherings, that take place in the park throughout the year, are testament to the park's ability to galvanize and unite our community. In essence, this park isn’t just an open space, but our common grounds of identity and history.
A significant part of this park's historical relevance are the 200-year-old buildings, consisting of the Sweitzer barn and farmhouse which act as cultural icons - emblematic of our local narrative and identity. Further, the archaeological discoveries at Juniata College in 2021, 2023, and 2024 have been vital in confirming the park's importance to Pennsylvania history, unequivocally verifying the site as the original location of Fort Halifax's establishment in 1756.
We ask for a sustained effort from this and all neighboring communities towards the preservation and restoration of all grounds and facilities at Fort Halifax Park for public use, limiting potential corporate interests that could eclipse the park's broader utility and cultural significance. Moreover, it is crucial to acknowledge the park's extensive historical significance and have it recognized in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places.
Our communal spaces are more than just an economic investment, they are a tribute to our shared heritage, a testament to our communal resilience, and a platform for creating shared future memories. Let us unite and protect Fort Halifax Park for generations to come. Please sign this petition to safeguard our heritage. Your signatures matter. Your voice matters. Let it be heard.
