SAVE OUR FORESTS

The Issue

Dear People of Meghalaya,

We are now facing another threat amidst this pandemic. On the 3rd of August, 2021, The Shillong Times reported that Patanjali may start palm oil plantation in Meghalaya, further stating, "Despite serious environmental threats, Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali group-led Ruchi Soya plans to start palm oil plantations in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states in a big way." We have all recently felt the hurt and loss of the great trees that flanked the roads at Upper Shillong, that were felled for road expansion, however it was but a small taste of the real threat we face with the possible plantation of palm trees (if the government has not already sold land to this company). As per the news report, Ruchi Soya has already completed field surveys, which indicates that the wheels have started turning towards a devastating future for Meghalaya, unless we stop them.

Palm tree plantations require a huge area of forest and the cheapest way to clear dense vegetation is by burning, which will emit significant amounts of greenhouse gasses, even if they adopt new methods like growing on peat swamps, the clearing of these areas too will result in the release of an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. Our atmosphere will be affected, our animals and indigenous vegetation will face extinction, our Meghalaya will cease to be the one we know and love. We don't need more palm oil production, nor have our people work in unsafe and hazardous conditions, we don't need more exotic trees ruining our ecosystem; we need to save our carbon sink. I urge each and every one of you to sign this petition and share it as much as possible, only we have the power to protect our forests!
