Connect Southside Richmond Bike Lanes

The Issue

Richmond residents deserve to walk, bike, and access public transit safely in their city.

The disconnected bike lanes surrounding the intersection at Forest Hill Avenue and Roanoke Street currently pose significant hazards for cyclists and pedestrians. This area includes an elementary school, a park, a bus stop, and several local businesses - all with substantial foot traffic. Motorists regularly speed, ignore crosswalk signs directing them to stop for pedestrians, and disregard the safely of cyclists by passing and not giving adequate space. As a result, pedestrians and cyclists are frequently being forced to share the sidewalks because biking in the road is unsafe.

The City planned an intersection redesign/roundabout here in the early 2010's, but was shot down by the neighborhood residents at the time. With the recent rash of pedestrian/cyclist traffic deaths in Richmond, now is the time to put it back on the table. Most of our city infrastructure projects are funded with state dollars. This redesign would first require strong community support for the city to put this project back in the grant pool.

We plan to bring this petition to the 5th District Town Hall on April 16th where DPW has been invited to attend. We would love to share your messages of support or any experiences/close-calls you've had with the current design.
