Conjugal visits in TDCJ

Conjugal visits in TDCJ
The Issue
Reform Conjugal Visit Rights in Texas Department of Criminal Justice
I am the wife of a currently incarcerated inmate within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). The pain and hardship that comes with being separated from your spouse, especially when you are states away, is immense. It's a struggle that many families face daily. We believe it's time to reconsider the policies surrounding conjugal visits within TDCJ.
Currently, Texas is one of the many states that do not allow conjugal visits for its inmates. This policy not only affects spouses but also children who wish to have more than just a fleeting interaction with their parents. According to PrisonPro.com, only four states in America currently allow conjugal visits - California, New York, Connecticut and Washington.
The benefits of such visits are well-documented. Studies show they can reduce recidivism rates by strengthening family bonds and providing an incentive for good behavior (Source: Journal of Criminal Justice). They can also alleviate some emotional distress experienced by families torn apart by incarceration. Conjugal visits will also lessen the sexual attacks on other inmate and facility staffs.
We understand concerns about security and additional costs associated with these visits exist; however, we believe there are ways to address these challenges while still allowing for this important family connection.
We urge TDCJ officials and lawmakers in Texas to reconsider their stance on this issue. Let us strengthen our families even as we work towards justice and rehabilitation for all involved parties.
