Unethical treatment of shelter animals and lack of Government laws and guidelines.
The Issue
Congress recently passed a bill making animal abuse and cruelty a federal felony but yet all across the United States there are animal shelters and non profit organizations in each state with no regulations and laws in place to protect the Animals that cross their paths. As an animal Advocate and networker on social media , on a daily basis ,I witness animal cruelty and neglect going on in these shelters. Where animals have been hit by a car , have open wounds and other medical emergencies. While I understand that nonprofit organizations run based solely on pledges and donations FROM the general public, there are circumstances when the animal needs immediate attention or they go into septic shock ! I am enclosing a picture and documentation of one of these animals. One of whom within the first 24 hours had several hundred dollars, then by Sunday night he had over $1,000 in pledges . The dog sat there in the shelter from Friday until Monday. The shelter had Chastised me specifically for sharing the dog as being urgent stating that the dog wasn't as urgent as posted. As you can see on this document enclosed, it clearly states the dog was indeed very urgent. If an individual person would let their dog sit in pain like that for 3 to 4 days they would have a felony against them and their dog taken away. Currently there are no federal laws or guidelines in effect for these shelters and non profit organizations and this needs to change. There are many rescues that partner up with the shelters ,of which some of them are good and legitimate, while others have suspected scams going on. I have also included this documentation with this petition . I am here to ask you today to put in effect some sort of laws and guidelines that these shelters and non profit organizations need to abide by. There are a few of these so-called rescues that are supposed to be non profit but have been bringing in more than $58,000, while these dogs are sitting sickly in shelters ,the non profit begs for donations, making them sound urgent so they may pull in a $1,000 or more in pledges just on one animal. Then they pull the dog and some times put the dog to sleep . They do this so they can gain those pledges .As an animal Advocate, I believe if the dog was put to sleep, the pledges should be returned back to the donors. Pledges were meant to be used for medical care and basic needs. Animals are sitting in shelters, suffering, and being exploited for these purposes.
