Congress: Slashing Legal Aid for Migrant Children Is a "Gift to Human Traffickers"

The Issue

Congress is considering a proposal that would eliminate legal aid for unaccompanied migrant children. Many of these children are survivors of trafficking or are at high risk of being trafficked. Removing their legal protections would make them even more vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and violence.

Earlier this year, the government halted funding for legal aid, and only a court order forced it to resume. Instead of honoring that ruling, lawmakers are now trying to cut off support through new legislation. If they succeed, thousands of children could be left defenseless in a system they cannot understand and that too often fails to protect them.

These children have fled dangerous circumstances, and some have already been victims of trafficking. Without legal representation, they are more likely to be deported back into unsafe environments or fall through the cracks and into the hands of traffickers here in the United States.

Anti-trafficking experts warn that this proposal is "a gift to traffickers". It increases fear, confusion, and desperation, which predators are quick to exploit. It is not just irresponsible; it is dangerous.

We urge Congress to reject any attempt to cut legal protections for migrant children. The United States should be working to prevent trafficking, not create the conditions that allow it to grow.

Every child deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to heal. Stripping them of legal aid is not the answer. It is a failure of compassion and a threat to public safety.
