Congress Must Oversee the Epstein File Releases

Congress Must Oversee the Epstein File Releases
The Issue
Summary
Court-ordered Epstein records are being delayed and improperly redacted — and victims have already been put at risk. This petition asks Congress to oversee how the DOJ is handling these releases so the law is followed and victims are protected.
Details
The public has been promised transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case through court-ordered document releases. To date, those releases have been delayed, incomplete, and in some cases mishandled in ways that raise serious concerns about compliance, victim protection, and accountability.
Millions of pages of Epstein-related records remain unreleased past established deadlines. When documents have been released, redactions have at times been technically deficient, including reversible redactions that reportedly exposed protected victim identities, as well as redactions whose scope appears to exceed what was required by court order. These failures undermine public trust and risk further harm to victims.
This petition calls for Congress to exercise its constitutional oversight powers to ensure that the Department of Justice is meeting its legal and ethical obligations in the handling, redaction, and release of these records.
Specifically, we ask Congress to form a committee responsible for:
- Enforcing compliance with court-ordered timelines for the release of Epstein-related records, and require DOJ to clearly document and justify any legally applicable reasons for delay
- Reviewing DOJ redaction practices to ensure they are legally justified, technically sound, and protective of victim identities
- Determining what internal standards, approval authorities, and review controls govern redaction decisions
- Examining why reversible or improper redactions occurred and what corrective actions have been taken
- Ensuring that withheld or delayed records are released unless a clear and lawful basis exists for continued redaction
Transparency is a prerequisite for accountability. Without a complete and properly handled public record, neither Congress nor the public can evaluate whether further oversight or investigative action is warranted.
Congress has both the authority and responsibility to ensure that these disclosures are handled lawfully, competently, and with respect for victims. Oversight of the release and redaction process is the minimum step necessary to restore confidence and prevent future failures.
We respectfully urge Congress to act.
