Quinn Smith started this petition to President of the United States Joseph R. Biden and

The COVID-19 relief, CARES Act, did not provide permanent access to running water for at least 30% of Diné (Navajo Nation). CARES Act funding could only be used for “a public health emergency.” Unfortunately, running water was not considered to be “a public health emergency” by Congress. This is a false assessment. Diné must travel miles for water to simply wash their hands. Congress stipulated that if the Diné did not use CARE Act funding by December, it would disappear. It is impossible to complete a large infrastructure project in only a few months.

9% of the world’s population (2015) does not have access to running water. This means that the Diné Nation has a need over 3 times the global average. Right now, the United States faces an egregious humanitarian crisis. If some politicians are fighting on behalf of indigenous people, what’s the problem?

Our government, as a whole, does not view providing running water to over 50,000 people (2010) as an urgent issue.

The Diné people should be treated as every other American citizen. Republican or Democrat, the government paid for your permanent access to running water. However, this cannot happen without your help. We need to pressure Washington and state governments to provide permanent water infrastructure in lieu of the CARES Act.
