Closing the Wage Gap

The Issue

Our goal is to have a community-based outreach, which would bring awareness to this pressing issue in society. The wage gap is a significant issue throughout all occupations, genders, and races. We specifically see this issue in professional sports in the United States. There is evidence that supports this, showing that it is a problem. According to the article, “Gender and the Salary of Coaches” the gender pay gap exists in not only athlete pay, but in coaches.  The article examines the idea that many have – that it may be due to different skill levels. However, this article investigates why coaches make different salaries. It is discovered that it is due to not only the type of sport, but to gender as well. Furthermore, another article states that the wage gap in professional sports is a major issue for athletes. Although it is something that is trying to be rectified, it is still something that is a major issue (Flake, Collin R).
Evidence also shows in the ethnic wage gap by providing statistical data of the employee wages and uses the mean and averages to determine how wide the wage gap and analyzes the data to make a hypothesis on why the wage gap is so wide, and what factors are causing the wage gap. It also provides the mathematical equations used to come up with the data presented in the document (Aeberhardt, Romain, et al.). The pay gap in the United States seems to be the biggest compared to most of the world. Other countries have been able to close the gap to almost 1%. Melissa Olive and Michelle Cameo talk about the wage gap, not only in America but all over the world. This source also expresses the deep lack of understanding Americans have regarding the wage gap. If third world countries can accomplish 99% close in the gap, we should be able to as well.  Other groups that are working to solve this issue include The AAUW – The American Association for University Women, The Serena Williams Fund, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, National Women’s Law Center – Equal Payback Project, Workplace Gender Equality Agency, National Organization for Women, Equal Rights Advocates, and National Committee for Pay Equity. These groups are trying to spread awareness about the issue and promote change.
