Defund the Postal Service

The Issue

For too long we have suffered with long lines, unmotivated clerks and mail carries.  The United States Postal Service is a pariah and I wish to put all mail delivery in the hands of the public section.  Though our taxes pay for the mediocre service we receive, we still have to pay for any and all services with our time and money.

Today was finally the last straw.  I was to receive a package on the 17th of July which I needed for a trip, so timing was of the essence.  When the delivery never arrived, I checked my tracking number and the message stated that my door was not accessible and that a delivery would be attempted the next day.  There was no delivery attempt the next day and my door has never been blocked.  Just as many others, I work out of the home and a door delivery or one to the secure PO boxes in my neighborhood would have been simple.  I opened up a case number.  The USPS never addressed it.  Several days later I called and was told my package would be delivered on the 22nd.  No delivery attempt was made and when I tried to call the local office there was no answer.  I drove to the local office and stood in a very long line...they had the package and there was apparently no intent to deliver.

If the postal service is going to be non-competitive, its time to fire them.  My grandfather was a rural mail carrier and he was timely, friendly and dependable.  If our postal service still operated this way I would never have started this position.  As it is, I haven't received even mediocre service in the last two decades.  It's time to abolish this institution.  If we want professional service its time to go to the private section.  Our postal workers can still have good jobs...just competitive jobs.  I see a world where our best of the best postal workers join the private sector for mail delivery jobs and provide us with a real service.  The bureaucrats who do not wish to provide good work for good pay can join the unemployment line.
