Congratulations on the Fender Lane Cycle Link

The Issue

In May 2022, Wirral Council completed and opened the new Fender Lane Cycle Link. Funded via the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund, it provides a fantastic east-west connection for Wirral residents to travel safely and sustainably.

We would like to show our support to Wirral Council for providing this route.  It’s precisely what is needed and we encourage planners to continue in the same vein. Extended links are needed to join the route to Moreton and beyond to the west, and Birkenhead/Wallasey to the east. This scheme sets a benchmark for similar schemes across Wirral and its quality will help secure funding for future investment.

We note that the route has not created any significant issues regarding congestion, and that both Northwest Ambulance Service (NWAS) and Mersey Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) have noted that the route has not created any issues for their staff. Emergency vehicles have permission to use the cycle lane when necessary.

We also note that the consultation process gave residents, councillors and organisations more than enough time to feedback ideas during planning.

Active travel is the perfect solution to a host of problems including the cost of living crisis, air pollution, climate change, road danger, public heath and bio-diversity loss.

We petition the council to hold strong against misguided opposition to the new active travel route, and to plan for improvements and for more safe, direct routes for sustainable transport in the coming years.
