Confront Sexual Harassment and Abuse in Eduardo Mondlane University's Medical School
Confront Sexual Harassment and Abuse in Eduardo Mondlane University's Medical School
The Issue
I am writing this petition on behalf of colleagues who faced sexual harassment and abuse perpetrated by a teacher during her Surgery internship at the Faculty of Medicine, Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. This is not an isolated incident but part of a larger, systemic problem within our institution.
Sexual harassment and abuse are pervasive issues that plague educational institutions worldwide. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 30% of students have experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault during their academic journey (UNESCO). Our university is no exception to this alarming trend.
The trauma inflicted by such actions can lead to severe emotional distress, negatively impacting the victim's academic performance and mental health. It also creates an environment where students live in constant fear rather than focusing on their studies.
We need immediate action from the administration to address this issue head-on. We demand thorough investigations into all allegations of sexual misconduct and appropriate punitive measures for perpetrators. Furthermore, we call for comprehensive sexual harassment training for all faculty members and robust support systems for victims.
By signing this petition, you are standing with us against sexual harassment and abuse at Eduardo Mondlane University's Medical School. Your signature sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in our institution or any other educational setting.
