Chris is a disabled man who cannot afford housing

Every day, as a resident of Linn County, I witness a troubling reality that should alarm us all. I see homeless individuals braving the unforgiving weather, their entire lives reduced to what they can carry on their backs. Each sight prompts a critical question: where are the funds, both federal and state, allocated for homelessness initiatives in our county truly going?

Linn County, despite being one of Iowa's most urbanized areas, faces a persistent and critical homelessness challenge. According to a 2020 report, homelessness in our state remains a pressing issue, posing significant risks to the health and safety of those affected. It is essential to ensure that every dollar allocated to combat this crisis is used effectively and transparently for the benefit of those in need.

Given this ongoing crisis, it is imperative that we conduct a thorough and transparent audit of Linn County's use of federal and state funds meant for homelessness initiatives. An audit will shed light on how these funds are currently used and highlight any discrepancies or inefficiencies. It will provide valuable insights into the actual impact of these funds and ensure that resources are reaching those who need them most.

We propose forming an independent committee that includes community leaders, residents, and financial experts to oversee this audit. This committee will work collaboratively to assess current spending patterns, identify gaps in aid delivery, and create actionable recommendations for improvements.

With the accountability and transparency an audit brings, we can ensure that resources are allocated effectively to develop comprehensive strategies that address homelessness at its root. This is about more than just accountability; it's about challenging our commitment to compassion and support for the less fortunate members of our community.

I urge you to join me in calling for a detailed audit of Linn County's homelessness funds. Let's ensure that every dollar truly counts toward making a difference in the lives of the homeless in our community. Please sign this petition to demand action and accountability.
