We, the undersigned residents of Concord New Hampshire, hereby petition the Concord City Council to amend its rules regarding public comment at city council meetings. In the interest of transparency and valuing the voices of constituents, we believe it is imperative to allow for public comment on any subject at all city council meetings.

Currently, the limited scope of public comment periods restricts community member’s ability to address important issues that may not be on the agenda. This limitation undermines the principles of democracy and hinders meaningful civic engagement. Allowing public comment on any subject will foster a more inclusive and responsive government that truly represents the needs and concerns of the community.

By expanding public comment opportunities, the Concord City Council demonstrates its commitment to transparency and accountability. It acknowledges the diversity of perspectives within our community and affirms its dedication to hearing and considering the input of all residents.

Furthermore, allowing public comment on any subject promotes a culture of open dialogue and encourages active participation in local governance. It empowers residents to raise awareness about pressing issues, propose solutions, and hold elected officials accountable for their actions.

We recognize that the Concord City Council may need to establish reasonable guidelines to ensure the efficient conduct of meetings while accommodating diverse viewpoints. However, it is critical that such guidelines prioritize inclusivity and fairness, ensuring that all voices have an opportunity to be heard.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Concord City Council amend its rules to permit public comment on any subject at all city council meetings. By doing so, the Concord City Council will affirm its commitment to democratic principles and strengthen the bond between elected officials and the community they serve.
