PUBLIC PETITION: PLEASE DO NOT DONATE - We are NOT accepting donations!  Change.org will not give us any of the funds collects.

We are only looking for signatures.

Douglas County Taxpayers Demand Fiscal Accountability We, the undersigned residents and taxpayers of Douglas County, strongly oppose the proposed millage rate increase ranging from 15.763% to nearly 33%. Even at the low end, this represents a minimum annual property tax increase of over $400 for the average homeowner—an amount that could otherwise cover groceries, essential medications, or routine doctor visits for many citizens, especially seniors and single-person households. We are being taxed to death, and we are tired of it. Our concerns include: 1. The Community Services Board (CSB) receives over $1.5 million annually from the state and has failed audits for more than two consecutive years. No additional local funding should be allocated until accountability and transparency are restored. 2. Connect Douglas public transportation is losing nearly $4 million annually. This unsustainable loss demands a reevaluation of its structure and funding. 3. The county is considering outsourcing strategic planning for Public Safety, which could result in unnecessary and costly expenditures. We demand cost-effective, internal solutions. 4. Departmental budgets have ballooned without clear justification. Overspending must be curbed, and fiscal discipline enforced. 5. Discretionary spending on parks, nature trails, filming initiatives, and new libraries—while attractive—should not take precedence over essential services like Public Safety. 6. Data centers, while promoted as revenue sources, place additional burdens on citizens through increased electricity costs, water shortages, and environmental strain. We strongly oppose any reduction in funding for the Sheriff’s Department. With over 157,000 residents, Public Safety must remain the top priority. If commissioners continue to allow unchecked spending and mismanagement, we call for new leadership—including new commissioners and a new CFO. We demand transparency, fiscal responsibility, and prioritization of essential services. Stop the tax increases. Stop the overspending. Start putting citizens first. Signed,
