The Issue

We, the residents of Stamford, oppose the draft Comprehensive Plan’s expanded land use guidance that would permit a range of multi-family residences in zones currently zoned for single-family properties within the City of Stamford. This objection includes the introduction of concepts that would alter the current single-family zone designations to a classification of R-2, "Residential Neighborhood," which the Plan describes is intended to support a range of single-family and “missing middle housing types”- including duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes, as well as expanded sized Accessory Dwelling Units, (ADUs) and other nonresidential uses with no off-street parking requirements. It may be technically correct that this Plan by itself does not rezone single-family neighborhoods. However, if this provision is included in the Comprehensive Plan, introduction of these multi-family housing types in single-family neighborhoods will undoubtedly be approved by both the Planning and Zoning Boards. As applications become submitted and approved, the rezoning will become a reality, neighborhood by neighborhood.

[A Note from the Civic Engagement Team] Change.org provides a tool that allows petition starters and supporters to email decision makers directly from our platform. A supporter used this tool to ask about the official protocol for submitting petitions to the City of Stamford, including who they should be sent to, the contact information for that person, and whether email versions of signed petitions are accepted. The Town Clerk helpfully replied with the following: Hi, I’d suggest you bring them to the Town Clerk office; we’ll make copy and take them to the Land Use office; they will let you know what the requirements are. Our hours are 8-3:45 M-F. Take care, Lyda Town Clerk
