Complete removal of the ban on specific breeds of dogs in the UK
The Issue
Currently, the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 bans five breeds of dogs: the American pit bull terrier, the Japanese tosa, the Dogo Argentinos, the Fila Brasileiro, and the American XL bully. This law prohibits the ownership, breeding or being bred, sale or exchange, advertising, giving as a gift, or advertising and allowance of these breeds of dogs in a public place without being muzzled or on a lead.
This, in the case of XL bullies, leads to many owners having to euthanise their dogs, and those who want to keep their dogs have to go through a difficult process to get the needed permission. The saddest part about this is that the number of dog attacks continues to grow, which shows the ineffectiveness of these bans on breeds.
We believe that dogs shouldn't be judged on their looks alone because their behaviour is based on the training they receive from their owners. So, instead of persecuting specific breeds, with dogs fighting past or "possible" threats, we should put more responsibility on the owners. The government should stop trying to cure symptoms and start working on the cause of the problem.
We encourage everybody to sign this petition to stop the government from taking half-measures, like banning specific dog breeds, and take real steps to solve the problem by holding the owners accountable for the incidents and free the banned breads.
