Compensation for 301 Dorm Relocation

Compensation for 301 Dorm Relocation
The Issue
The residents of 301 dorms ask for fair compensation
- Stressful Moving Process: On the 11th of April 2023, more than 700 residents of the TNS 301 dorm were informed about relocating to temporary housing due to the gas line issue within the building. This situation has caused many disruptions to students' daily education. We were given limited time to move. Additionally, we were told we'd be given our assignments the morning of the 12th but many of us didn't receive them until the 13th. Many of us missed classes due to the urgency of this move.
2. The terrible environment: The conditions of these temporary housing assignments are very poor as compared to the 301 dorms, where students are paying between $18,260-$27,550 a year. Many students noted the uncleanliness of the environment; including dust and dirt, broken furniture, poor lighting, rats, and unworking AC.
3. The terrible living experience in 301 dorms: Just to name a few instances, there have been continuous elevator breakdowns, many false fire alarms, flooding, and a fire that displaced many students. Now a gas leak has caused this mass relocation.
4. Poor communication: In addition to the significant delays in communication, the Housing and residential team at The New School rarely reply to students', residents', and parents' emails and phone calls which causes significant stress and disruption when we are trying to resolve various issues we encounter with our housing. Poor communication significantly impacts students and parents.
5. Unclear timing: During the initial stages of this relocation, we were told to expect to be out of the dorms for 7 days. Shortly after, we were told to pack enough clothes for 1-2 weeks. However, some students have heard that we may not be able to return to 301 for a month or more.
