Compel Virgil I Grissom High School to offer AP Physics C
The Issue
When I first started looking into requirements for college to help decide what classes to take, I found that physics is an integral part of most STEM majors. This led me to register for AP Physics 1 as it is the only one Grissom offers. However, I quickly learned that AP Physics 1 does not grant college credit for most STEM majors. It also became clear that the curriculum did not align with the introductory physics courses that are foundational for STEM programs. As someone who wants to be as prepared for college as possible, this was disappointing and concerning. When I asked relevant authorities at the school whether there was a possibility of AP Physics C being taught, I was told there wasn’t and that I could commute to a different high school in the district or dual enroll if I wanted to take it. Neither of these options are easy as one takes time out of the school day to commute and the other is a financial burden not all students could take on. I have spoken to many of my fellow classmates who all say these options are not ideal.
Virgil I Grissom High School can better serve its students by offering AP Physics C: Mechanics. This course not only aligns more closely with university-level courses but also covers fundamental principles that are crucial for a solid understanding in any STEM field. Unlike AP Physics 1, AP Physics C: Mechanics provides students the opportunity to earn college credits, significantly reducing the financial burden of higher education. Including this course would not just benefit those on a STEM path but improve our school's reputation for academic excellence.
Data from the College Board indicates that students who take AP Physics C perform better in corresponding college courses than those who studied AP Physics 1. Many high-achieving schools across the nation already offer this course and have reported higher student satisfaction and success rates. It’s time for Virgil I Grissom High School to join these institutions in providing a comprehensive education that equips students for their future.
Let's make our voices heard and propose a valuable change that will benefit current and future students. By offering AP Physics C: Mechanics, we create more opportunities for academic advancement and align our school with the educational standards required for today's competitive environment. Sign this petition to advocate for a richer, more effective physics education at Virgil I Grissom High School.
