Compel the Government to Approve the Firefighter Protection Act

The Issue

I am an on-call firefighter, tirelessly working to ensure the safety and wellness of our communities during emergencies. However, as a full-time employee at a public university, I am denied the ability to attend fire calls during work hours. This not only affects me but the system at large - a system that only works if we, firefighters, are allowed to attend fire callouts throughout the day, regardless of other commitments.

The Firefighter Protection Act aims to rectify this situation. It proposes to offer protections and allowances not only for on-call firefighters like me but for every emergency responder who juggle dual responsibilities.

Today, we need to put the safety and well-being of our communities first - a need that can only be met if our public institutions, such as universities, support and respect the dual roles of their staff members.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2018, over 70% of firefighters in the Canada were volunteers . Yet, many companies and organizations ignore the vital role these individuals play in our community.

We demand our government to recognize this predicament and approve the Firefighter Protection Act, granting us the flexibility to serve our communities better. Your signature will be a testament of support, a pledge for safer neighborhoods, and a backing for the selfless service of our firefighters.
