Compassion Over Cruelty: Let Goats Tommy and Bam-Bam Stay With Their Family

Compassion Over Cruelty: Let Goats Tommy and Bam-Bam Stay With Their Family
The Issue
For more than 10 years, Tommy and Bam-Bam, two goats my uncle has loved and cared for, have lived on his property in Franconia Township. They are not livestock but family companions, loved as pets and part of daily life. Now at the end of their natural lifespan, they have only a year or two left. After a neighbor’s complaint, the Township ordered their removal. My uncle was denied at the initial hearing, and now the Township is requiring a non-refundable $1,800 fee just to request a variance hearing. If he does not comply, fines of $500 per day will begin at the next enforcement.
In the past, the goats occasionally wandered onto the neighbor’s property, but my uncle has since installed secure fencing, and they no longer roam. They are harmless, well cared for, and enjoyed by many neighbors. What makes this especially difficult is that my uncle once went out of his way to help this same neighbor when she was injured in 2016—he not only paid for a sidewalk to be built for her but also arranged and organized the work. Despite this act of kindness, she is now pressing for their removal.
We have also contacted sanctuaries, but because of their horns, they cannot accept Tommy and Bam-Bam. At their advanced age, removing the horns would be extremely painful and inhumane, leaving them with no safe alternatives. Forcing them out at this point in their lives would be cruel and unfair, taking them away from the only home they have ever known.
We respectfully ask Franconia Township to grant an exception and allow my uncle to be grandfathered in, so Tommy and Bam-Bam may remain until the end of their natural lives. They pose no harm, and removing them now serves no purpose but cruelty.
