The Issue

This petition is very close to my heart because it represents the Sikh community — a community that is much larger than many realize, not only in the USA but all around the world. Sikhs have been making significant contributions in the United States for decades, serving in every field with dedication and pride. Unfortunately, after recent incidents, people wearing turbans are often unfairly judged and treated with suspicion or hatred. A turban is not a symbol of hate — it is a symbol of faith.

Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh man, was involved in a tragic accident on Florida’s Turnpike in South Florida. This was not a deliberate action with malicious intent, but a devastating accident resulting from a U-turn gone wrong. While the importance of accountability is undeniable, it is equally important to ensure that justice is served fairly and justly.

The charges against Harjinder Singh do not align with the unintentional nature of this accident. An overly harsh sentence would not only be unjust but also a failure to acknowledge the human element of error and misfortune. Singh is a young man whose life could be irreparably altered by a sentence that treats him as if he acted with criminal intent.

This petition seeks to highlight the importance of sympathy, equity, and a balanced justice system that recognizes the nuances and contexts of individual cases. Singh should receive a fair and appropriate consequence—one that fits the actual circumstances instead of being excessively punitive. We are calling for a reconsideration of Harjinder Singh’s charges and encourage a commutation of his sentence.

Let us ensure that the justice system is humane and just, reflecting both the values of accountability and compassion. Please join us in advocating for fair treatment for Harjinder Singh by signing this petition.
