In light of the tragic deaths of Ryan Jackson in 2017, Keeven Robinson in 2018, Chris Joseph/Daviri Robertson in 2019 and most recently, Modesto Reyes in May of 2020, along with the countless complaints of police misconduct, we are asking the citizens of Jefferson Parish (with support from our neighboring parishes) to stand with us as we demand the implementation of body-worn cameras to help deter police misconduct and offer some measure of visual transparency and accountability. While we understand that Body-Worn Cameras (BWC) aren’t a perfect solution to the need for improved police accountability measures, BWCs are an important tool to help provide crucial visual evidence of law enforcement interactions with the general public. For instance, Body-Worn Cameras can potentially reduce instances where there’s an inability to take action because of differing vantage points between law enforcement and the citizens they take an oath to serve and protect. Likewise, Body-Worn Cameras can also help to protect and/or exonerate law enforcement in instances of baseless complaints of police malfeasance. Lastly, the implementation of BWCs can be used in police training, management, and internal investigations to achieve more fundamental organizational changes with the long‐term potential to improve police performance, accountability, and legitimacy in the community. Therefore, in conjunction with members of the NAACP Algiers/Gretna branch #6310, local clergy, and concerned/tax-paying citizens of Jefferson and surrounding parishes, we are demanding the implementation of body-worn cameras as a means to document and improve the standard of community policing in Jefferson Parish.
