Potbelly pig ordinance

The Issue

Help us make a change in the city of Wyoming, Michigan! The newest addition to our family may have to be removed per our city’s ordinance policies on pigs being kept as pets. With your help we are eager to make a change!
For those of you who have had a chance to meet a potbelly, know they are amazing unique animals. Hamon, who is our lovely pig baby, is nothing short of just that! He has given our family, friends, and neighbors so much love and sense of hope in this time of uncertainty! He has truly been our light in times of darkness and fear. There are no words to justify exactly how our family would take loosing him.

About Hamon:

He is a potbelly pig who is about 4 and 1/2 months old. He loves running behind our kids, playing with his toys, and getting his belly scratched. He also enjoys playing with the dogs in the neighborhood that pass by. He has definitely been a conversation piece to say the least and enjoys every minute of attention he gets. More often than not shows off for the new onlookers by a quick sprint through the grass, nudging at their legs, or turns and flips from side to side. His personality is beyond compare. He is very routine in nature. From the minute he walks he oinks to be fed then out the door to go potty. Yes! He is potty trained. After frolicking through the grass he comes back indoors usually for a quick nap until the kids wake up to play with him. Night time comes and he walks himself to his kennel flips the blankets over his body and face sometimes closing the door when he really doesn’t want to be bothered. (Clearly not locked but shut for the most part)... like any other animal in the “pup” stages he gets mischievous at times. Knocking over trash and toys usually. We love him more than anything!!

Education:

They are often views as stinky, hideous animals that serve no purpose other than to feed mankind. We often get this misconception from how we as humans treat them. Keeping them in small confined spaces often rolling around in their own urine and feces (not because that is their natural instinct, but because they have no other choice). They are actually quite clean and very particular animals. He will not go to sleep unless he has his blankets alongside him. Research studies can attest to their intelligence compared to other animals but only a family of one can attest to the emotional support and love received by them.

What we need help with:
For starters Wyoming’s ordinance does not allow for livestock to be kept as pets. Granted he is a pig, livestock is defined as an animal used to purpose such as meat or making money in someway. Hamon (our piggy) does not fit this category nor does he fit their category of pet. Us and so many other pig families are faced with the dilemma of having him ripped from our hearts and homes or to move in order to keep him. If you are not an animal lover or who have never owned I pet just wouldn’t understand how hard the first option truly is! He’s apart of our family now! We can not simply strip him from his home and give him to a farm. He is not accustomed to that. Please help us by signing this petition and standing with us to make a change for Hamon and other pig families! Thank you for your time.
