The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, community members, and supporters, respectfully petition the City of Ottawa to take immediate and proactive measures to address longstanding pedestrian safety concerns at the intersection of 15th and Ash Street.

This location is heavily trafficked by pedestrians of all ages, including children walking to school, families, and seniors. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly hazardous due to limited visibility, inadequate signage, and a lack of effective traffic calming measures. Numerous near-miss incidents have been reported by local residents—highlighting the urgent need for intervention before a preventable tragedy occurs.

While no recent fatal accidents have been publicly documented at this intersection, a lack of reported fatalities should not be the benchmark for safety. Community reports and firsthand accounts of frequent close calls underscore a systemic issue that demands attention. This intersection is not currently equipped with modern pedestrian protection features common in other municipalities.

We respectfully request that the City of Ottawa prioritize and implement the following safety measures:

Immediate Safety Assessment

  • Conduct a thorough review of current conditions at the 15th & Ash Street intersection, including signage, lighting, visibility, and driver compliance.

Installation of Safety Enhancements

  • Flashing pedestrian crosswalk beacon or lighted signal to alert motorists.
  • High-visibility crosswalk markings using reflective or thermoplastic materials.
  • Improved pedestrian crossing signage placed at appropriate distances to alert approaching drivers.

Traffic Calming Measures

  • Evaluate and implement speed-reduction strategies, such as raised crosswalks, narrowed lanes, or speed bumps, if deemed appropriate by city engineers.

Comprehensive Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Study

  • Conduct a professional traffic and pedestrian study to assess long-term needs and guide future infrastructure planning in the area.

Implementing these measures will:

  • Protect vulnerable populations, especially children and seniors.
  • Prevent injuries or fatalities before they occur.
  • Promote safe, walkable neighborhoods that enhance Ottawa’s community livability.
  • Demonstrate the City’s commitment to proactive public safety and responsible planning.

We urge the City of Ottawa to take swift and meaningful action. The cost of inaction is far greater than the cost of prevention. Your leadership in addressing this issue will be recognized and appreciated by the entire community.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that these improvements be evaluated and implemented as a public safety priority.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned Residents and Supporters
