Monday, 7/19/2021, my grandmothers name, Margie Chumbley was presented to the Nacogdoches Independent School District’s board by Mr. Martin as the desired name to replace the current “Malcolm Rector Technical High School” in Nacogdoches due to, two schools being named after him within the community currently. An unbiased committee was formed of different leaders within the district and the community and the name, “The Margie Chumbley Academy for Success” was voted upon by the committee, the name was agreed upon by the majority of the committee members, approved by the current Superintendent, Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. However, what should have and could have been a joyous celebration for my grandmothers legacy and her contributions to the educational system within Nacogdoches was demeaned, degraded and disrespected! This meeting was simply the “Agenda Review Meeting”, however it took an unnecessary direction and frankly appeared as if some members have their own personal agendas. Policy was followed, yet that was unsatisfactory for some. I am hurt, disappointed, angry, but I believe mostly in shock. My grandmother has dedicated 57 years of her 85 years on this earth to investing in young people of all ages, she genuinely loves the students and staff, she believes it’s truly an honor to have even been considered. However for me, that’s not enough when something so monumental is at risk! I WILL NOT have the faith without the works, we are committed to doing the work these next few days to ensure that she is advocated for! My family has watched her from the sidelines for decades and now it’s our turn to get on the frontlines as we advocate for her and the legacy that she will one day leave behind in every child that she has impacted!
