Legalisation of Euthanasia in Queensland
The issue
'Euthanasia'- the word is derived from the meaning “good death.” It is a way of alleviating one’s suffering. Helping someone with a terminal diagnosis die with dignity. The right to choose assisted methods of your own death when already suffering from a terminal diagnosis is a grey area in Queensland's Healthcare System.
I aim to promote the right for each individual (over 18 years) to decide whether this is something they would want for themselves if they were to get to a terminal illness or become cognitively incapacitated. I believe this a human rights issue which causes people to live with a poor quality of life. This personal liberty matter needs to be addressed immediately to spare pain and end prolonged suffering.
Currently euthanasia is too poorly funded and therefore seen as a flawed process in QLD, although we have seen an increase in palliative care funding. Though alleviating some pain associated with terminal diagnosis is important, I do not believe palliative care entirely helps end one's suffering or allows for an this personal decision to be left to an individual. Euthanasia Laws have been passed in many locations around the world. Through understanding the communities wishes on this matter, we can form a legislation that is right for Queenslander's and their families.
