Mayor, Council:
With all due respect, you have not answered any of our questions or concerns as set forth in our Petition that was presented in person to you on Sept. 25. We now have over 600 signatures (including many that were signed in hard copy and not online) from residents and taxpayers of Moorestown on this Petition and you have not responded in any meaningful way to our questions. Indeed, your answers to most questions have been vague and non-responsive. Moreover, you have scheduled a Special Meeting on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m., which is closed to the public and the express purpose of the meeting is to discuss affordable housing, noting that "formal action may be taken". Therefore, we have no choice but to communicate our position to you in this clear and direct way. As taxpayers of Moorestown who will be directly affected financially and in the interests of our children's schooling for decades to come by your decisions, we state the following:
FIRST, we do not consent to your plan to place 150 units of "very low, low and moderate income" rental units at 200 Hartford Road since you have failed to answer even the most basic of questions from those who will be directly affected;
SECOND, we do not consent to you donating publicly owned land (12.5 acres of prime real estate) to a group in order to accomplish your plan, particularly where there has been no appraisal done on the value of the land;
THIRD, we do not consent to your plan to give this development to a "non-profit" group that will then collect rents, management fees, federal tax credits and other benefits from maintaining the development, all while paying $0 in property and school taxes to Moorestown;
FOURTH, we do not consent to incurring the costs of connecting the low income housing development to the Mount Holly MUA sewer services and incurring all of the costs that will result from that, including paying for these services into the future;
FIFTH, we do not consent to our schools being impacted by 150-500 new students all entering the school system at once when the housing development is completed, this is particularly relevant since the schools Board of Education recently filed for a waiver allowing extra students in each class because they schools are already "bursting at the seams" ;
SIXTH, we do not consent to having our property taxes increased by even $1 to in order to financially support 150 low income households who will contribute no taxes to our tax base, and instead will require services and add hundreds of students into our schools;
SEVENTH, you are hereby placed on notice that by continuing this course we reserve our rights to obtain legal representation and by doing so you will be incurring even more costs and fees by the Township and its taxpayers for having to defend a lawsuit that you otherwise could have avoided by simply responding in a direct fashion to our questions.
If you proceed with this proposal and continue to ignore our reasonable and legitimate questions and concerns, we will seek to hold you accountable in the next elections.
Thank you.
