Community Concerns with SFotR

The Issue

This petition has been created by vendors and others in the community who have concerns involving Scifi on the Rock (SFotR). The suggestions here have been presented in relation to issues that have been observed by those of us ‘on the floor’ during events. The two requests presented here are given with the goal of improving SFotR as a whole.

1.      As we are sure you’re aware, there was an incident with a vendor selling AI art at the event this weekend. Multiple people reported them to the committee members and from what we could see, no action was taken. The vendor was allowed to remain and continue selling their AI art.
As such, we request that SFotR exercise more commitment and action towards its claim of disallowing AI art in their events. This would include having an outlined procedure in place for committee members to follow in the case of an accusation of AI art being found.
Ideally, the procedure would clearly lay out steps for how the public is to report AI art, steps for the committee member to take during their investigation, and a clear transparency on the final decision and how it was made. Especially important would be steps to be taken should the report of AI art occur during an actual event and the timeline for action to be taken.

2.      Secondly, we are requesting that the SFotR committee circulate anonymous feedback forms to all vendors, volunteers, and workshop coordinators after an event. This is to allow those of us involved as part of a ‘business relationship’ to better relay issues we may have observed, suggestions on how to improve the areas we’re in, as well as allowing for positive feedback on things that are working well. While it is not being said that SFotR has not been receptive to feedback in the past, many people would feel more comfortable voicing their thoughts through an anonymous platform.

All of us want the very best for SFotR in all its iterations and this petition is a way for us to better help our voices be heard. SFotR has grown into a very large and successful event over the years and with that growth, it’s often good to open up to new ideas or perspectives. We appreciate the committee members taking these concerns into consideration and hope to see action taken regarding this petition.
