My name is Bernard Mathis and I am currently a Correction officer at George R. Vierno Center. On July 12th 2019 I was demoted from my position as Captain within the Manhattan Detention Complex due to a violation/misdemeanor arrest that occurred on April 6th 2019. While I understand the severity and importance of said incident I am humbly asking you to assist me in restoring my title as Captain. Throughout my career I have shown exemplary work ethic as well as done my best to learn and perfect my craft to the best of my ability. As a captain I always did my best to lead by example, teach, support, and protect both staff and inmates within my facility. It is disheartening for me to have let down myself, my family and friends, as well as the department and for that I am truly sorry. After a tremendous amount of reflection and prayer I feel that I have grown and learned a great amount about myself and life as a whole. I am hoping that you can consider and assist me with this matter.
