California: Require All Cops to Attend Diversity Training and Go To Counseling.

California: Require All Cops to Attend Diversity Training and Go To Counseling.

The Issue

Require all peace officers in California to complete in-depth cultural sensitivity and diversity training, spend time volunteering in their own communities, and receive regular counseling through a licensed and unbiased therapist.

The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is the organization that is responsible for establishing the educational standards and training for all of California's peace officers. But in light of recent events and prejudices that have been perpetuated for hundreds of years, it's clear that more is needed.

We recognize the need for cops in our communities- we are grateful to them and know that wanting better for our communities means that we have to want better for them, too.

That's why we demand that new legislature be introduced that requires in-depth cultural sensitivity and diversity training, combating prejudice both known and unknown.

Law enforcement is an emotionally taxing occupation- and help for our officers in the form of mental health professionals, needs to become a standard. We require that officers complete a certain number of hours of one-on-one counseling with a licensed professional therapist each week or month. At least 20% of this time must be spent addressing biases and overcoming intolerance, which every person has. The healthier our peace officers are, the healthier our communities are. Plus, this creates a norm of seeking help for mental issues among our citizens, too.

Knowing your community is paramount to greater respect and higher rates of success in making a difference in the lives of those you have sworn to protect and serve. We demand that each officer be mandated to spend a certain amount of hours each month volunteering in the community they serve, getting to know their citizens and becoming a role model and a friend, as well as a respected confidante.

Your help is appreciated and needed greatly in this fight for a better California- and we aim to set the standards that the rest of the United States will follow.
