Commencement on Stage, Not Screen, at Colorado State University: Postpone Graduation

Commencement on Stage, Not Screen, at Colorado State University: Postpone Graduation
The Issue
In light of the announcement that the University of Colorado Boulder cancelled their graduation and are developing an alternative, virtual option, we must respectfully voice our opposition in hopes that CSU will not make the same decision.
A virtual graduation is not enough. Seniors have worked too hard to have a “Skyped” celebration. We have been preparing for and dreaming of this for years. Some of our classmates are first-generation college graduates; others are fully funding their education. Everyone wants to have the feeling of achievement gained from walking across that stage. An “emoji” cap toss would be nearly offensive, rather than celebratory.
We understand and appreciate that CSU is dedicated to the community's health and well-being. We recognize that the original commencement ceremony (May 15-17) is very unlikely to transpire and we do not want to endanger anyone by holding a large gathering. Thus, we urge you to please consider postponement of an in-person commencement, rather than a virtual option. Several institutions, such as the University of Denver and Rice University, have made such a decision. A virtual ceremony would be a poor substitute for true celebration and acknowledgement.
The dramatic turn of the semester has been incredibly challenging and difficult for the Spring 2020 graduating class. This health crisis has prevented us from many moments of meaningful closure on our collegiate chapter. Please do not let it rob us of a real commencement as well. Allow us to have a proper celebration, once it is safe to do so.
