Save Nefarious, the SC station cat!

The Issue

**Edit for background info-

Nefarious showed up one day at the police station, South Central Patrol, Dallas, Texas (214-671-4500)

along with 4 other feral cats. Two disappeared, 1 was injured and needed fostering (he adapted well and was adopted) and Nefarious, the tiniest, most scraggly of them all, came up to the back doors begging for food- but you couldn’t touch her! She was very skittish and quick. She would eat and run. Eventually myself and a few others gained her trust enough to let us pet her. The plan was to TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) but that’s when we noticed she was pregnant! She soon had 4 kittens.

Maybe it was the timing that made us so enamored with her. She showed up June 2020. During Covid. It was a scary and stressful time for police officers. Then the kittens- July 7th. The 4th anniversary of the murders of the Dallas 5- mass shooting in downtown Dallas 7/7/16. She made sad officers smile and focus on her babies for a little while. She and the babies were fostered (we have bobcat and coyotes visit the station lot frequently) by an officer but Nefarious just didn’t acclimate to that life. The babies were adopted but Nefarious was not suitable for adoption so she was TNR and released where she was found. She brings joy and comfort to many officers. It’s a great mental health and morale boost! We need her as much as she needs us! Many of us keep her space clean and care for her. She buries her waste, she doesn’t jump on cars, she doesn’t bother anyone. She’s very skittish still, so she stays out of the way. Even officers that don’t enjoy cats find her silliness entertaining!**

Does Nefarious brighten your day? Boost your morale? Give you a distraction from your crappy day? Sign the petition! It appears that only a few people are complaining about her, so let’s tell the command staff that there are many more that love her!
Because of the few complaining, the command staff is actively trying to get rid of Nefarious. It’s tricky for them because she’s a feral cat and was TNR (Trapped, Neutered, Released) by the city program, but they are trying hard to remove her from the home she claimed over a year ago.
It’s considered dangerous to remove/relocate a feral/community cat and is only recommended as “humane” if it’s a last resort to save the life of the cat. (Please google for resources- there are many!)
Feral, or Community Cats, are good for mental health, they kill and deter rodents that spread disease, and they keep other feral animals away.
Please sign and let the command staff know how you feel.
