The issue

Every day, as we take public transport here in Queensland, we are confronted by an unsettling sight. Teenagers, often as young as 13, puffing away on vapes, seemingly unaware of the potential health risks they are embracing. Vaping among teenagers has become a pressing issue, transforming from a seemingly benign trend into a dangerous habit. We need to address this situation urgently to protect our younger generation.

According to a study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in 2020, approximately 14% of Australians aged 14 and over had tried e-cigarettes. More alarmingly, a significant portion of these new users were teenagers. This trend is not just troubling because of the health implications but also because it leads many down the path of nicotine addiction.

The addictive properties of nicotine in vapes are often underestimated by teenagers, who might not be fully aware of what they are inhaling. Vaping can lead to long-term health problems including respiratory issues, decreased lung function, and even higher chances of transitioning to traditional cigarette smoking as they grow older.

What we need now is concerted action across Queensland. We urge the Queensland Department of Education to implement comprehensive educational programs in schools to inform students about the true risks associated with vaping. In addition, we call upon local health authorities to engage in community awareness campaigns that specifically target parents and teenage groups.

Moreover, stricter regulations must be enforced on the sale and marketing of vape products to minors. There should be an increase in penalties for vendors who flout these regulations, ensuring they understand the gravity of supplying nicotine to our youth.

It’s time for the Queensland government and communities to band together to combat this growing issue and work towards a healthier future for our adolescents. Let's safeguard their health and well-being before vaping becomes an irreversible aspect of their daily life.

Please help us put an end to teen vaping in Queensland by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and protect our children from the hidden hazards of vaping. Sign now and join the fight against this silent epidemic.
