COLUMBIA CITY PARKING RATES

The Issue

The Seattle Department of Transportation is scheduled to raise the metered parking in Columbia City to $6.50/hr. I disagree with any increases or additional metered parking spaces because I believe that the rates in our area are too high. I believe that they are unfair, inequitable, and unwanted:

-We are the only neighborhood in South Seattle that has metered parking.

-Our metered parking rates in the afternoon and evening are extremely high compared to other, busier areas, including downtown, Capitol Hill, and Lower Queen Anne and the Seattle Center. These prices are not fair.

-Many neighborhoods similar in size throughout Seattle do not have metered parking, including Phinney Ridge, Beacon Hill, West Seattle, Georgetown, Wallingford, and Upper Queen Anne.

-SDOT's justification is that having two parking spots available will help business owners, but the owners believe that an increase in parking prices and metering will only discourage their businesses. These prices will add an extra $13-$20 to a nice meal out or an intricate hair style. These prices will discourage customers staying in the neighborhood and "cross pollination" shopping between our small businesses.

-Our neighborhood is not like areas in North Seattle. Our area gentrified quickly pushing out the customer base for our legacy businesses. Adding barriers to bringing the customer base back will only hurt these businesses further at a time when the city says that it's working toward maintaining the very businesses that it's hurting.

-Our local business support groups are fighting these measures, including the Columbia City Business Association, the Columbia City Business Improvement Area, and the Rainier Avenue Business Association.

Responded
Since September 2025, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has been gathering feedback on a proposal to update on-street parking and curb management in the Columbia City neighborhood. We want to thank everyone who took the time to share their thoughts with us – residents, visitors, employees, businesses, and community members. We heard a range of feedback, including support for the proposal and concerns about the changes, as well as comments about the current paid parking rates in the area. After carefully reviewing this feedback, we’ve adjusted the original plan. Starting May 4, we’ll lower paid parking rates in Columbia City by $2.00/hour during midday and $2.50/hour in the evening as part of citywide rate adjustments. The new rates will be: • Morning (8 AM – 11 AM): $1/hour • Afternoon (11 AM – 5 PM): $4/hour • Evening (5 PM – 8 PM): $4/hour We’ll also move forward with installing new 2-hour and 4-hour paid parking in Columbia City, as shared in November 2025. Installation will begin in May, with prep work starting in April. Two-hour paid parking, load zones, and disabled parking spaces will be added at:  • S Edmunds St from 37th Ave S to Rainier Ave S (south side only) • S Edmunds St from 39th Ave S to Rainier Ave S (south side only)   • Rainier Ave S from Hudson St to 39th Ave S (east and west side) • S Hudson St from 37th Ave S to Rainier Ave S (north and south side) • S Hudson St between 37th Ave S and Rainier Ave S (south side) four parking spaces currently signed as 2-hour time-limited parking except by Restricted Parking Zone 29 convert to 2-hour paid parking for everyone Four-hour paid parking, load zones, and disabled parking spaces will be added to the north and south sides of S Alaska St from Rainier Ave S to 38th Ave S, near the Rainier playfield. Thank you again for sharing your feedback. We understand that changes like this can feel challenging and we want you to know we are listening. As with all paid parking areas, we’ll continue to monitor changes. This fall, we’ll collect parking occupancy data across all paid parking areas and if needed make data-driven rate adjustments in November. Our goal is to improve parking availability and access while supporting neighborhood businesses and visitors.
