Mandatory “Deconstructing Power and Oppression” Class at Colorado State University

Mandatory “Deconstructing Power and Oppression” Class at Colorado State University
The Issue
The undersigned students and staff of the CSU campus are concerned about the overwhelming presence of racism and oppression across the country and on our campus.
We are insisting that CSU takes steps to remedy this situation and become a leader of, and example for, Universities and Colleges across the United States. We want CSU to be on the front line of battling oppression and discrimination and the first step is educating student, staff, and campus officials.
To meet this end, we propose that CSU and the University Curriculum Committee create a 3 credit AUCC requirement for students to take a “Deconstructing Power and Oppression” class to better educate students on: diversity in its many forms, including but not limited to race, socioeconomic status, ability - both intellectual and physical, age, religion, gender identity, citizenship, sexual orientation and ethnicity. Each category needs to discuss privilege and oppression, both current and historic. Additionally, this course needs to discuss intersectionality and how social identities affect each of us.
