Legalize Polyamorous Marriage in Colorado

Legalize Polyamorous Marriage in Colorado

The Issue

Marriage comes with perks that we’re all aware of. Tax benefits, the ability to share healthcare, and even the opportunity to pick a step kid up from school; not to mention the many emotional benefits. These are often overlooked aspects for most, but for those in a relationship with more than two people, we are unable to currently experience these same benefits. This has inspired our petition to pass a law changing the legal definition of a marriage from an entity formed by two persons, to an entity formed by people. In 2020 a similar proposal was passed by city council in Somerville, Massachusetts in an unanimous decision. Some may doubt the significance in scope of this issue. To them I ask, did you believe that laws preventing gay marriage were an issue worth fighting for? It’s estimated that 4-5% of people living in the United States are currently participating in some form of a polyamorous relationship. For direct comparison, 4.5% of the American population identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community. If we support marriage equality for every single American, then the definition and law should reflect such in Colorado. We are asking local leaders in the Polyam community to get involved, share and support this petition. We know that the need is great enough in Colorado that we can gain support to start the conversation about normalizing polyamory in our society. We hope you'll consider signing this petition to help us get the attention of state law makers and politicians who can make this change possible! We're already partnered with one Mayoral candidate that identifies as polyamorous!
