The issue

The Swooping Magpie

The early 2000s was a period of incredible change for the Collingwood Football Club. The club was invigorated with the recent appointment of a new President and Coach, and after a couple rough years the on-field product was starting to improve. Not even tradition was spared as the Magpies switched out their black stripes for white, a move that would be emblematic of Collingwood's transition into the modern game.

Between the seasons of 2002 and 2004, the imaginations of thousands of supporters were captured by an elegant style of football which had taken them to two Grand Finals in those three years. This iconic period of Collingwood's history was encapsulated most fondly in what is most known to many as the 'Swooping Magpie' jumper.

To many Collingwood supporters, it is more than just a jumper. It's symbolic of the new age the club was entering and, in many ways, this is a reflection of the current situation the club finds itself in 20 years later.

Over the years the jumper has taken on a sort of 'cult status' and is highly sought after by collectors. And with the recent addition of the Swoop Range on the Collingwood Shop, there is clearly some level of demand for a return of this guernsey.

On behalf of the members and supporters of this club, we are asking for the long-awaited return of this iconic guernsey.

FAQ:

Are Nike allowed to use the Swooping Magpie design? With the recent signing of Nike as our apparel sponsor it is understood that there are potential issues in regards to the use of what is perceived to be an 'Adidas' design. While Adidas were the apparel sponsors back then, they do not hold any rights over the use of the design as it is owned by Collingwood/AFL. Therefore there should be no legal issue with Nike using this design. It would be a similar situation to Nike's Classics Jerseys in the NBA.

When would the design be worn? To fully kick off the return of the jumper, a preseason appearance would be par for the course. As for the H/A season, ideally it would be used for Away games in situations where a clash jumper isn't necessarily required or would increase contrast. Some examples of teams we would wear it against include: Adelaide, West Coast, Brisbane, Geelong, Western Bulldogs and Sydney.
