Petition to make college students become educated on the severity of sexual harassment
The Issue
Being informed on sexual harassment is very important especially in college. This type of violence happens all the time with little done about it. The importance of this petition is to make every college student either take a course or listen in on an advocate about sexual harassment and its severity. This is something that has personally happened to me and I think students can become smarter if they learned more about the consequences.
My Goal: Is for students to be informed on the consequences, how it affects others mental state and useful tips to ensure our safety. Becoming educated about this can limit some sexual harassment acts. If students know more about the trouble they can get into and the way it affects victims maybe they will think twice before doing it. I thinking making students become more informed on the severity will make them reconsider and stop others if they see something bound to happen. Some ways we can do this by informing students with tips when encountering this form of harassment.
Some tips we can use is:
1.Providing students with escorts when needed
2.Increasing the presence of security officers
3.Initiating bystander intervention programs,
4.Creating a mobile app.
By providing students with escorts this can ensure safety and get them home safely. A lot of times sexual predators will attack in private but if a student feels unsafe we should provide them with escorts on campus and from stores if they encounter something unsafe. The presence of security officers should be active on the weekends. They should be roaming the streets and campus to see any suspicious acts. Officers should question people if something doesnt look right and be monitoring bars and house parties to make sure people get home safely. Initiating bystander intervention programs gives students training to better prepare to intervene when a situation feels suspicious or dangerous. This type of program uses various strategies that will help students become more confident in speaking up and addressing the situation. Speaking up could potentially stop an assault so we need to provide these useful strategies so students are prepared. Lastly we should provide students with an app that acts as a virtual escort. Nowadays we are all on our phones and this can potentially save others lives. This app will allow someone to call for help, it can set up a safety timer when they are walking at night and invite some to “watch” over them remotely. If they dont make it to their location safely or the timer doesnt turn off, then whom is watching over can reach out to authorities.
In other countries we can use the same steps, even though they might have access to the same resources as the US, we should still teach students useful tips and ways they can help prevent acts from happening. The important thing is to stand up for yourself and others when encountering this kind of violence. Two of my main focuses are parts of Africa and India, we need to stand up for these young women to help them feel safe in their own environments.
We need to stop this violence and INFORM students that this NOT okay and NO means NO.
